"Paris Hilton & Captain Beefheart" is the Knights of Infinite Resignation's follow-up to the Peace and Rest EP, released in April 2007.
Inspired by an infamous photo of Paris Hilton holding a copy of Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica album, the single's A-Side tells the epic
story of one lonely hipster's quest for love and acceptance (well, sorta). Evoking what one might imagine to be a modern-day reincarnation of Jan
& Dean, "Paris Hilton & Captain Beefheart" explores the gap between high culture and low (er . . . pop) culture in the context of what we suppose
is middle culture art (i.e., an indie rock song). Really, though, we're making it too confusing -- it's just a good song.
The second original on the record, "Cricket the Bug," continues the rockin' good time. At least one NBR staffer thinks "Cricket" sounds like a
perfect combo of the Beach Boys and Prisonshake (seriously), but we'll let you make the call on that one. As a bonus to those who choose to
digest their sounds via the CD (rather than the digital download) format, the compact disc version of the record also features a cover of Pere
Ubu's "Ice Cream Truck." Says Knight Lee Wadlinger, "I like the irony of us doing a cover of a song that says, ‘There’s too much music.’”
All in all, the "Paris Hilton & Captain Beefheart" single shows us one side of the Knights that we haven't necessarily seen before -- their sense
of humor. Maybe Wadlinger sums it up best: “The Electric Eels did TV theme songs. The Velvet Underground released that version of
‘Temptation Inside Your Heart’ with those vocal overdubs left in. Joe Strummer appeared on South Park. You don’t have to be perpetually
serious.”
